Arkansas Fishing Guides

Arkansas is home to the best trophy brown trout fishery in the eastern half of the country — the White River below Bull Shoals Dam. The Little Red River produced the 40 lb 4 oz Rip Collins brown that held the IGFA all-tackle world record from 1992 until 2009 (now held by a New Zealand fish), and the Norfork tailwater put up a 38 lb 9 oz fish in 1988 that briefly held the record before that. Add the Buffalo National River's smallmouth fishery and Arkansas is a destination state for anglers chasing big fish in clear water.

Where to fish

Top waters in Arkansas

White River (below Bull Shoals)

Brown trout, rainbow trout

100-plus miles of tailwater trout fishery. State record and former world-record brown trout water. Drift boat country; generation schedule dictates everything. Fall and winter produce the largest browns.

Little Red River

Brown trout, rainbow trout

Below Greers Ferry Dam. Former IGFA world-record brown trout water (40 lb 4 oz). Smaller water than the White, wade-friendly during non-generation windows. Trico hatch in summer is excellent.

North Fork of the White River

Brown trout, rainbow trout

Short but famous tailwater below Norfork Dam. Produced the 38 lb 9 oz brown trout that held the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame world record from 1988 until the Little Red fish topped it in 1992. Wade-only when generation is off — extremely productive water.

Buffalo National River

Smallmouth bass

First national river in the US. Classic Ozark float fishing for smallmouth in clear, spring-fed water. Low-elevation wilderness — most of it is roadless. March through June is prime.

When to go

Arkansas fishing by season

March–May

Spring

Sulphur and caddis hatches on the White. Pre-spawn smallmouth on the Buffalo. Water temperatures are optimal for trout activity. Spring rains can push generation to full, affecting fishing.

June–August

Summer

Tailwaters stay cold regardless of air temperature — the real advantage of Bull Shoals and Greers Ferry. Trico hatch on the Little Red. Smallmouth fishing transitions to early-morning and late-evening windows.

September–November

Fall

Brown trout pre-spawn — this is the trophy window on the White and Little Red. Streamer fishing peaks. Stunning Ozark fall colors on the Buffalo. Cool nights, warm days, active fish.

December–February

Winter

Brown trout spawn wraps up in December — respect the redds. Year-round tailwater fishing. Massive midge hatches on warm afternoons. Fewer anglers, more access to prime water.

Why Arkansas

The White River system produces more trophy brown trout — fish over 20 pounds — than any other fishery east of the Rockies. The cold tailwater releases from Bull Shoals, Norfork, and Greers Ferry created these fisheries almost by accident, but the resulting food-rich water grows fish faster than anywhere in the Ozarks. Pair it with the Buffalo National River for a smallmouth float and you have a multi-species destination in a single trip.

Insider tip

Fall brown trout on the White are best targeted during low-to-moderate generation in November — the big fish move up onto the shoals to spawn and are in water shallow enough to sight-fish. Streamer eats from 8-pound-plus browns are the payoff. Book guides who know the shoal system well.
