Louisiana Fishing Guides

Louisiana is the best saltwater marsh fishery in North America. The Mississippi Delta dumps so much sediment and nutrient into the Gulf that it created tens of thousands of acres of shallow bay and marsh — a nursery for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder on a scale no other state matches. Venice, Hopedale, and Delacroix are names serious saltwater fly anglers know. It's sight-fishing to tailing bull reds in a foot of water.

Where to fish

Top waters in Louisiana

Mississippi River Delta (Venice / Port Sulphur)

Redfish, speckled trout, black drum, jack crevalle

Ground zero for trophy bull redfish — 30-40 pound fish in water shallow enough to see their backs. Poling skiff country. Fall and winter are peak for the giants.

Biloxi Marsh / Hopedale / Shell Beach

Redfish, speckled trout, flounder

Expansive shallow marsh system east of New Orleans. Slot redfish (18-27 inches under 2024 LDWF rules) for light tackle and fly. Sight-fishing to tailing fish on calm mornings.

Lafitte / Barataria Bay

Redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum

Southwest of New Orleans. Extensive marsh interior for all-tide fishing. More structure (rigs, cuts, passes) than Biloxi Marsh. Good choice for windy days when the interior stays fishable.

Atchafalaya Basin

Largemouth bass, white bass, catfish

The largest river swamp in the US. Inland freshwater alternative when the coast is weathered. Largemouth fishing in the cypress-tupelo bayous. Guides out of Butte LaRose and Henderson.

When to go

Louisiana fishing by season

March–May

Spring

Slot redfish and speckled trout are active throughout the marsh. Weather is stable, water temps climb into the 70s. Fly-fishing sight-cast conditions are excellent. Peak season for anglers flying in.

June–August

Summer

Trout fishing stays strong. Bull reds start showing in the rivers and passes. Heat and mosquitoes are serious — early-morning trips dominate. Offshore for cobia, mahi, and tuna when the weather cooperates.

September–November

Fall

Best season overall. Bull redfish peak in the Delta. Water clarity is often excellent after cold fronts. Cooler weather, fewer bugs. Book October-November months ahead — this is the most requested window.

December–February

Winter

Trophy bull redfish in the Delta — 40-pounders are caught every week when weather allows. Cold fronts push fish deep briefly but recovery is fast. The single best trophy-redfish window of the year.

Why Louisiana

The marsh behind the Mississippi Delta is a functioning bull redfish factory — fish over 20 pounds are the target on a normal day, and 30-40 pound bulls are caught weekly. Nowhere else in North America offers this kind of shallow-water trophy saltwater fishing with this level of predictability. The guide fleet out of Venice runs flats skiffs specifically designed for ultra-shallow marsh poling — a fishery that simply doesn't exist elsewhere.

Insider tip

Fish Venice in November right after a cold front — the north wind blows water out of the marsh and concentrates bull reds in the deep cuts and river edges. These are the easiest sight-casting shots at 30-plus-pound fish you'll find anywhere. Check the forecast daily and be ready to move your booking by 24 hours.
