Wyoming Fishing Guides
Wyoming is the least populated state with the most trophy trout water per capita in America. The North Platte's Miracle Mile and Grey Reef, the Snake River's cutthroat fishery, the Green below Flaming Gorge, the Wind River reservation waters, and the southern reach of Yellowstone National Park all sit inside state lines. If you're chasing a big fish in clean water under an empty sky, Wyoming is the shortlist.
Top waters in Wyoming
North Platte River (Grey Reef)
Rainbow trout, brown trout
Trophy tailwater below Alcova Reservoir. Average rainbow is 18 inches; five-pound fish are routine. Spring spawn window (March-April) produces the largest fish of the year.
North Platte River (Miracle Mile)
Rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout
Seven-mile stretch between Kortes and Pathfinder Reservoirs. Technical water, highly pressured, but produces genuine trophy fish. Streamers in the fall pre-spawn are the local move.
Snake River (South Fork / Jackson)
Yellowstone cutthroat trout
Native fine-spotted Snake River cutthroat in the Jackson section. The most iconic dry-fly river in the Rockies — massive hopper eats in August and September.
Green River (below Fontenelle)
Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout
Less famous than the Utah section below Flaming Gorge but arguably fishes better. Walk-wade and drift boat water. Mormon cricket hatch in July is an event.
Wind River Range lakes
Golden trout, cutthroat trout, brook trout
Backpack-in golden trout fishing at 10,000+ feet. The largest goldens outside Alaska live here. July and August only — the passes are often snowed in until late June.
Wyoming fishing by season
Spring
Grey Reef rainbow spawn drives the year's biggest fish into shallow water. Most freestones are still blown out with snowmelt. Tailwaters (Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, Green) carry the season.
Summer
Snake River cutthroat, hopper season everywhere, Wind River Range backpack trips. PMDs, caddis, golden stones. Best month is August — water dropped, hoppers up, terrestrials everywhere.
Fall
Brown trout pre-spawn on the Green and North Platte. Streamer fishing peaks. Elk bugling in the background. Snow possible after mid-October — check passes if you're mobile.
Winter
Grey Reef and Miracle Mile fish all winter with midge hatches. Most of the state is locked in ice, but the tailwaters stay open. Dress for 0°F and wind — this is not forgiving water.
The Grey Reef section alone produces more genuinely-large rainbows than most entire states. Add the Snake cutthroat fishery, which is a native species that doesn't exist anywhere else, and the Wind River Range goldens, which are the largest in their range, and Wyoming becomes a destination for fish you can only catch here. Low population means low pressure. Short seasons mean the fish aren't hammered year-round.
Grey Reef is famous for boat-fishing, but the walk-wade access above the reef (on the BLM side) is free, public, and holds the same fish. Go during runoff in May when most anglers assume it's off — the tailwater stays clear while everything else blows out, and the fish are concentrated in the slack water.
